DMD 122 - Foundations of Patient Care II

Foundations of Patient Care 2 (FPC2) continues the presentation of fundamental elements needed for successful patient care. This course, along with the Clinical Dentistry series will introduce and teach contemporary dental practices.

As dentistry evolves, patient care is changing rapidly with new modalities, techniques, and practices for clinical care. This course, along with the Clinical Dentistry series, introduces and instructs the D1 student in the most recent developments in evidence-based dentistry.
As the complexity of patient care evolves in the curriculum, critical
elements associated with these complexities will be appropriately presented, discussed, and studied.

A variety of learning experiences and modalities will be used to introduce and instruct the D1 student to clinical skills essential to the practice of general dentistry. Learning will take place in the classroom, the dental simulation laboratory, and the Oral Health Center clinic. This course will also employ the use of simulated patient encounters, both mannikin-based and with standardized patient actors, to teach foundational assessment and response skills.

Foundations of Patient Care 2 focuses on teaching concepts, techniques, and skills whose mastery is critical for the general dentist to arrive at a proper oral diagnosis. Scientific-based evidence supporting best practices in dentistry will be presented alongside the instruction of techniques and skills to demonstrate the need for evidence-based practice and instruct the student how to critically read and assess relevant literature. New concepts introduced within the FPC2 course include dental radiology, periodontology, oral pathology, salivary diagnostics, and dental photography. Students will continue learn more advanced concepts in minimally invasive dentistry, restorative dentistry, dental ethics, patient management, and communication. The last few weeks of the course will include instruction in concepts necessary for patient care in the Oral Health Clinic including the using the electronic health record, infection control, dental insurance,
scheduling, and patient management.
