DMD 121 - Foundations of Patient Care I



Foundations of Patient Care 1 is the first in the Foundations of Patient Care course series, which will continue throughout the entire curriculum. As the complexity of patient care evolves in the curriculum, critical elements associated with these complexities will be appropriately presented, discussed, and studied. Foundational topics will be ‘revisited’ with additional knowledge that will allow a deeper and stronger understanding of the multifaceted arena of patient care.

Foundations of Patient Care 1 is structured into three foundational categories covering a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to:

  1. Introduction to Patient Care
    1. The dental team
    2. Communication
    3. Oral cancer screening
    4. Coaching
    5. Nutrition
  2. Cariology
    1. The oral cavity and normal variance
    2. Oral disease
    3. The progression of caries
    4. Caries detection and diagnosis
    5. Saliva and the oral microbiome
  3. Ethics and Professionalism
    1. Ethical Codes in Dentistry
    2. Ethical case scenarios
    3. Student and practitioner professionalism


Peer-to-peer activities will continue throughout the course to cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while practicing the patient care skills taught in didactic presentations. Faculty participation and oversight will vary throughout the course depending on the topic covered and scheduling.
