MED 210 - Skin, Blood & Lymph

The first week of Skin, Blood, and Lymph II (SBL II) will be dedicated to pharmacology week. This week focuses on general principles of pharmacology (i.e., pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, drug biotransformation, and clinical trials) with an introduction to adrenergic and cholinergic drugs. The remaining majority of the SBL II course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive overview of hematology/hematopathology and clinical dermatology/dermatopathology. All blood cell lines and lymph tissues will be discussed in the context of the pathophysiology and pathology of both non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases.  Related clinical presentations and diagnostic approaches will be discussed, allowing the student to integrate course content. Specific topics discussed in this portion include red cell disorders, the clinical work-up of anemia, non-neoplastic and neoplastic white cell disorders, and bleeding and hypercoagulable disorders. Pharmacology pertinent to the treatment of anemia, human immunodeficiency virus, and neoplastic disease will be integrated throughout the course.  Overarching topics presented in this course include integrated discussions regarding clinical presentations of fever and malaise. This course will provide an overview of the diseases, disorders, and neoplasms of the skin including infections, immunopathologic skin diseases, and dermatologic malignancies.
