MED 174 - Art, Observation & Medicine

This is a foundational interprofessional education course that introduces learners to the competencies of interprofessional collaborative practice (values/ethics for interprofessional practice, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork).  Utilizing the power of the visual arts and the museum setting, the AOM course provides the opportunity for learners to apply their knowledge of interprofessional collaboration through activities that enhance communication, critical thinking, and observation skills among learners from diverse health professions. Campus-based activities reinforce skills learned in the museum while exploring topics related to diversity, cultural competency, and implicit bias.  The course culminates in a virtual small-group interprofessional education (IPE) event where learners utilize learned skills to work on diverse health professional teams and develop a potential diagnosis and treatment plan.  Museum-based sessions are held through partnerships with the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR.
